The Georgia Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church (M.E.C.) was organized at the church's General Conference of 1830. The members met for the first time in Macon, Georgia, in 1831. Within a few years the church began to struggle with the issue of slavery. Bishop Joel Duncan McDavid served as bishop of the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church from 1980 to 1984. Previously he had been pastor of the Dauphin Way Church in Mobile, Alabama, and from 1968 to 1972 was secretary of the Committee on Restructure of Boards and Agencies for the Alabama-West Florida Conference.
